What is AD?

How it works

AD is a simple natural process that involves the breakdown of organic matter in an oxygen free environment, this produces biogas which is around 60% methane and 40% carbon dioxide. This can either be burnt to generate electricity or cleaned and injected into the gas grid.  AD plants can be run off many materials including food waste, sewage, farmyard muck, and energy crops amongst other things.

The by-product of AD is a nutrient rich bio-fertiliser called digestate which contains the three main nutrients for plant growth, nitrates, phosphate, and potash.
